Drama is a special art. As you know, Chekhov’s contemporaries in the perception of his plays were divided into two camps. The hot fans of the Art Theater came across polite indifference or frank hostility even those who were very located to the Chekhov Prose writer. “Chekhov is an undoubted talent, but his plays are bad. They are not resolved in the issues, there are no content,” L. Tolstoy repeated more than once in the conversations. “His play is far from the best of what he wrote …” said I. Bunin. In the twentieth century, much has changed. With the development of the directorial theater, the drama as a text has lost its meaning – it lives and dies in the performance. And only a few plays – probably, they are called classic – it is necessary not only to see on stage, but also to read.
