“Pike”. Legends of the Soviet underwater fleet: Morozov, Kulagin

Submarines of the type “Sh”, or “pikes”, as the sailors called them, were the most numerous representatives of the class of the average submarines of the RKKF in the 1930s. It was they who carried out the main severity of the struggle on naval communications in the early years of the Great Patriotic War. And it was they, despite their very distant design, that became the most effective submarines of our fleet. On their combat account more than 50 are reliable ships and ships – for an extremely unfavorable combat situation in which Soviet submariners had to act, this figure looks impressive. But our own losses were extremely high: out of 44 pikes participating in the war, 31 died about these ships and their unprecedented combat campaigns are told by a real book prepared on the basis of archival documents.
